Functional Restoration San Diego is a patient centered clinic designed to help individuals suffering with chronic pain better manage their lives through medical treatment, active functional exercises and interpersonal empowerment.

Mission Statement: It is the mission of Functional Restoration San Diego to help patients struggling with chronic pain rethink their future, rebuild their body and spirit, and rejoice once again.

Meet the Team

Joel Eduardo Mata, M.D.
Joel Eduardo Mata, M.D.Medical Director
Dr. Mata completed his Medical School training at Stanford University, where he also completed a residency program in anesthesiology, a 1-year fellowship in pain management and stayed on in a teaching and supervisory role at the university hospital. Dr. Mata has many years of experience as a successful clinical and interventional pain management physician as well as helped design and implement pain management programs in Arizona and Maryland.

He is currently practicing in San Diego California where he splits his time as a pain management physician for a 500+ multispecialty Healthcare system and a medical director for a leading workers compensation third party administrator.

Linh Griffith, LPC
Linh Griffith, LPCClinical Psychology Director
Linh Griffith is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC6004). She graduated from the University of San Diego with her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2014. With almost two decades of experience in the mental health field, Linh has worked with a diverse group of clientele that span age-range, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race and religion. Depression, anxiety, substance use, and psychosis represent Linh’s areas of practice, with a specialty in grief and loss counseling and pain management. Linh provides therapy that consists of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to challenge thoughts and behaviors; Peron-Centered Therapy to cultivate a space that is dedicated to personal needs; and Solutions Focused Therapy designed to help individuals take active steps in accomplishing goals.
Linh has worked at FRSD since 2018 and strongly believes in FRSD’s mission statement. She believes that chronic pain can be best managed by shifting perspective and have greater success when treating participants holistically. Addressing participants mental and emotional barriers can alleviate issues pertaining to fear of reinjury, finding purpose and re-defining life that feels fulfilling once again.
Francis Garcia, DPT
Francis Garcia, DPTDoctor of Physical Therapy
Dr. Francis Garcia is a licensed physical therapist and a San Diego native. He attended  Point Loma Nazarene University where he studied kinesiology with an emphasis in applied health sciences. He then attended Loma Linda University where he graduated magna cum laude with a doctorate in physical therapy. He graduated  within top 25% of his graduating class earning an induction to the National Honor Society of the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy. Dr. Garcia also held the honor of being the youngest graduate in his class obtaining his doctorate degree at the age of 23. 

Dr. Garcia brings to FRP years of experience and has worked with the orthopedic, neurological, chronic pain, geriatric, and sports populations. He has taken aspects from his various physical therapy backgrounds to implement a plan of care specific to each patient. He has experience in leadership and management/supervision of other physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, and occupational therapists.

Dr. Garcia is seen as an empathetic clinician who loves the FRP model. His goal and focus is to improve your mobility and function to help regain your independence. He combines his various interventions and techniques to improve strength and flexibility. He believes that we are constantly learning and growing to become one’s best self. 

Sara L. Chalupsky Poore, LMFT #125700

Sara is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who specializes in treating individuals in her private practice in Carlsbad, California. Sara provides therapeutic support through utilizing Dialectic Behavior Therapy, Grief Therapy, mindfulness, Acceptance Commitment Theory, and tenets of Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Sara works with an array of clients through life transitions (early adulthood, working moms, and seniors). Sara currently supports clients with severe anxiety and depression, panic attacks, chronic pain, and grief and loss.

Sara earned her Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts majoring in Sociology from Arizona State University and furthered her education completing a Master’s in Marriage Family Child Counseling.

Sara has been in the social work field for over 30 years including working in private practice, at a psychiatric clinic, for San Diego Regional Center, and in hospices. Sara previously worked as a Bereavement Coordinator in Orange County and San Diego County and as a Service Coordinator and Psychiatric Case Manager. Sara has provided individual therapy, group counseling, supportive home visits, and was part of the team that launched the first grief camp for children in Orange County (Camp Erin).

Sara relishes in her spare time spending time with her family, reading, kayaking, and bike riding.

Jessica has 15 years of experience working with adults, children, and adolescents. She has extensive experience with diverse populations in medical, group and community settings. She works with clients collaboratively by providing a non-judgmental, compassionate, and supportive setting. She believes in working in a partnership with her clients to help them identify their challenges and utilize their strengths to help them achieve their goals. In her free time she enjoys traveling, live sports, music, reading and art. Jessica is a big foodie and enjoys trying new restaurants and new recipes. She also loves spending time with her family and friends.

Juan Calderon-Aguirre, is a proud graduate of Case Western Reserve University, Mandel School of Social Work. His diverse training and extensive experience span various reputable institutions including Community Research Foundation, Rady’s Children’s Hospital, Veterans Affairs, and the Community College System. His therapeutic approach is multifaceted, drawing from Family Systems Theory, TF-CBT, CBT, DBT skills, and emphasizing the importance of acceptance. He obtained his license from the state of California in 2016. Having grown up in Orange County, he has called San Diego his home since 2006. I am deeply excited to contribute to FRSD and eagerly anticipate the opportunity to support all participants with dedication and compassion.
Tanja Marcetic
Tanja MarceticArt and Wellness Instructor
Tanja earned her Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Art University of Belgrade, Serbia. Her trainings in ELDOA postural exercises and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy helps her provide guidance on body mechanics and relaxation techniques to enhance clients’ body awareness and self-care practices.
Tanja has extensive experience working with diverse populations in online, group, and community settings.
She provides a safe and supportive space for clients to express themselves and navigate life’s challenges. Her work combines a deep understanding of the benefits of artistic creation and exercise on mental, emotional, and physical health. Tanja enjoys educating clients on proper body mechanics and self-care techniques to enhance their daily functioning and reduce pain/discomfort.
In her free time, she enjoys traveling, trying new recipes, and spending time at the beach.
Luisana Elias
Luisana EliasProgram Operations Manager + HR Generalist
Luisana Elias earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from California Lutheran University. Her major emphasis was in Marketing with a minor in Spanish. While attending school, she completed an internship with UrbanWorks Entertainment where she helped with the marketing plans for movie titles such as Fat Albert, Hair Show and the execution for the DVD release of The Cosby Show series. Luisana started her working career at AMN Healthcare Healthcare staffing agency. She was able to climb the corporate ladder from an administrative assistant to an Account Manager in a very short period of time. She quickly learned she enjoyed establishing key relationships with her accounts while being able to help them with their needs. These relationships helped her sales department receive job orders, under competitive times, before any other agency was given the opportunity to fill them. In 2009, she started working for the first Functional Restoration Program in Southern California. It is there that she found her passion for helping others. At Functional Restoration of San Diego, Luisana is able to use both her business organizational skills as well as her ability to connect with its program participants. Luisana is currently working on her Human Resources Certification.
Cindy Elias
Cindy EliasNew Patient Coordinator + Pharmacy Specialist
Cindy Elias is the Pharmacy and New Patient Referral Coordinator at Functional Restoration San Diego. She has her associate’s degree from College of the Desert in Palm Desert, CA. Her journey into healthcare started at Village Counseling as an administrative office assistant. She was then later promoted to Clinic Manager at their Desert Hot Springs office. In 2001, life ventured her to America’s Finest City when she started working at AMN Healthcare where she later became the Team Leader for their Benefits department. In 2008, she followed her heart and spent a couple of years living in Washington state, working at KPS Health Plans in the role of credentialing specialist. In 2010 she returned to San Diego and continued working in the world of credentialing for Community Health Group in Chula Vista. She later took a decade off to focus on supporting her husband in the military and to grow their family.
In 2022, Cindy joined the FRSD team and brought her knowledge from insurance benefits along with strategic thinking to be able to tackle workers compensation. She has always fostered the idea of providing the best customer service possible. Cindy is always looking to help our patients as well as our team members. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her two beautiful sons, going on motorcycle rides with her husband and enjoying music concerts with her sisters.
Rita Velarde
Rita VelardeMedical Administrative Assistant
Rita’s journey into the medical administrative trade began when she coordinated senior patients at a home health and hospice facility. Since then, she has dedicated her profession to patient’s care while providing support and guidance through their healthcare journeys. She finds joy in being an administrative professional committed to making a positive impact in people’s lives here at FRSD.

She considers herself to be a culinary explorer, yoga devotee, and real estate aficionado. Born and raised in San Diego Ca, she has always had a curiosity for the healthcare industry.
